Day In The Life Of A Energy Engineer

Day In The Life Of A Energy Engineer

As an energy engineer, you'll be involved with producing energy through natural resources, such as the extraction of oil and gas, as well as from renewable or sustainable sources of energy, including biofuels, hydro, wind and solar power.

Job Duties

You'll need to design, develop and build renewable energy technologies while combining renewable energy production with existing power systems. You’ll also be expected to arrange new supplies, negotiate tariffs with fuel providers, carry out site inspections and energy surveys, and design and select equipment.

You may be based in an office, laboratory or on-site. Site visits and fieldwork are conducted outside and in all weather. Some jobs may be offshore in remote locations. For this reason, you’ll need to prepare detailed schedules of work, feasibility studies and cost estimates as well as check site and ground conditions for the installation of renewable technologies, such as wind turbines.

Common Skills

To become an energy engineer you need to have a degree in engineering or a scientific subject. Relevant subjects include earth sciences, electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering, environmental engineering, mining or petroleum engineering or renewable or sustainable energy.

You'll need to show an interest in science, technology and the environment with a general understanding of the energy market. Knowledge of relevant legislation surrounding energy efficiency and carbon emissions is also sought after by employers. Other skills include project management skills, initiative and the ability to recognise emerging problems and proactively develop solutions.

Career Development

Due to the demand in this area, career opportunities are good, and you'll have the chance to work up to a senior engineer or management position. This may require moving employers to a bigger company or possibly having to relocate but achieving chartered status can help with professional development and may lead to higher salaries.
